Tournament Information

Besides the US Open, numerous other exciting tournaments and events take place throughout the week.  Many are AGA-rated, while others are purely for fun. These tournaments offer a great opportunity to compete and enjoy different formats.  Explore the pages linked in the left-hand menu for details on each event.

All schedule information can be conveniently accessed on your mobile phone using the Yapp app. Click HERE to see the Yapp app guide.

Note: The details of each of these tournaments are not final yet. The information provided is primarily from the previous congress.  As Tournament Directors for each congress are confirmed, the details will be updated. Check back here closer to the congress dates for the latest information.

Attention:  New Clocks and New Time Controls

We’re pleased to announce that the AGA has bought all new game clocks to replace the aging Ing clocks.  Instructions for setting the new clocks can be found on the table sign near each board.

To go with these new clocks, we're also announcing a significant update to tournament time settings for the US Go Congress:

All tournaments will now use Bonus (Fischer) time controls (with the exception of Lightning Go, which will still use sudden death.)

See a short presentation on Bonus Time HERE .

Bonus time (also known as Fischer time) is a modern timing system where each player starts with a set amount of time and gains additional time after every move. This change is designed to improve game flow, reduce stress, and provide a fairer experience for all players.

The time controls used for each tournament are provided on the individual tournament page.  But as a summary, the US Open and NA Masters will use 60 minutes base time with 20 seconds added per move. Other side tournaments (Senior, Women's, Die Hard, Pair Go) will use 20 minutes base time with 15 seconds added per move.

For the Self-Paired and Baum Prizes tournaments, if you decide to have your game rated,
you may choose between Bonus time or Japanese Byo-Yomi time.

For rated games, the AGA sets the following minimum time controls for the results to be accepted by the rating system:

Bonus time:

  • 10 minutes basic time plus 20 second per move added, or

  • 20 minutes basic time plus 15 seconds per move added, or

  • 30 minutes basic time plus 10 seconds per move added

Japanese Byo-yomi time:

  • 30 minutes basic time, plus 20 seconds 3 times

Notes

  • All tournament rules and pairings will reflect the new timing system.
  • Please familiarize yourself with how Bonus time works if you haven’t used it before.
  • Tournament staff will be available to help with clock setup and questions.

We’re confident these changes will make games more enjoyable and the Congress experience even better.

Tournament Rules

  • AGA rules will be in effect for most tournaments.  Exceptions are noted.
  • AGA Concise Rules of Go.
  • AGA Complete Rules of Go.
  • Tournament Directors (TD's) have the final say over any disputes.
  • For major tournaments, if your opponent hasn't shown up after 10 minutes, you may start their clocks.  If they still haven't shown up after an additional 20 minutes (30 minutes total), they will forfeit their game.  Please see the TD for further actions.

Proper Conduct and Etiquette

  • Tournaments should be enjoyable for all.
  • Please always show respect for your opponent and other players.
  • Games should be won by superior talent and technique.
  • Refrain from distracting behavior and noisemaking near tournament play.
  • Please analyze games away from tournament play.
  • Please show courtesy by arriving promptly for all events.
  • Report all results immediately after the conclusion of your games.
  • Be courteous in defeat and generous in victory.
  • Remember that you will have ample opportunity to experience both during the week.
  • Resign when you have clearly lost.

Please make every effort to aid those who are not native English speakers and who may have trouble understanding the Congress regulations and schedule.
