"This year, the usual wide assortment of outdoor activities that complement the go instruction at Go Camp will include professional tennis lessons at no additional charge from Go camp instructor Yoshi Sawada, who is a certified tennis pro." JIE LI AT NOVA TONIGHT: Jie Li 9d will give a free lecture at tonight's meeting of the NoVa Go Club in Arlington, Virginia. Li, who won the recent Cotsen Open in Los Angeles, will do an in-depth analysis of one of his recent tournament games. The lecture begins at 7:15P at the Central United Methodist Church, 4201 N. Fairfax Dr. Li is also offering a Weekend Intensive in DC on May 20-22, before heading back to the West Coast at the end of the month. In the 2-day intensive go study session, Li will focus on top-level professional training techniques, including pro game study and pro-level life-and-death problem-solving. SYRACUSE HITS THE BOOKS: The Syracuse (NY) Go Club is investing in community outreach by donating go books to the local public library system. "Among our first donations were the first five volumes of Janice Kim's Learn to Play Go series, Kano Yoshinori's 4-volume Graded Go Problems for Beginners, and several copies of the first three volumes of the Hikaru no Go," reports Richard Moseson. Club members of our club Onondaga County residents can reserve the books via their home computers and have them delivered to their local library branches for convenient check o ut. "Since we made the donations, we've noticed that many manga enthusiasts have been checking out the Hikaru no Go graphic novels, and we're hoping this will translate into some youths and adults visiting our weekly go meetings to learn how to play the game (the libraries put a bookplate inside the cover of each book acknowledging our club's gift). KOBAYASHI SATORU LEADS MEIJIN LEAGUE: With a 4-0 record, Kobayashi Satoru 9P is the current leader and only undefeated player in the ongoing Meijin League. The 30th League is a round-robin tournament among nine players to determine the challenger for the Meijin title in Japan, currently held by Cho U 9P. Last year Kobayashi tied Cho U in the League, but lost the play-off game to him by 2.5 points, and Cho went on to take the title from Yoda Norimoto 9P. Four players in the league have three wins: Yoda Norimoto, Yamashita Keigo 9P, O Meien 9P, and Sakai Hideyuki 7P of the Kansai Kiin.
PARK YOUNGHOON WINS ANOTHER ONE: Park Yeonghoon 9P has defeated Kim Donghee 1P by a score of 2-1 to take the 15th Korean BC Card Cup, adding another trophy to the growing list of titles he has won. Park's greatest triumph so far was winning the 17th Fujit su Cup international tournament in 2004, which earned him a promotion to 9P. He won the 6th Korean Chunwon title in 2001. The BC Card Cup is his second championship this year, having won the 1st Zhonghuan Cup in January, another international event, in which he defeated three top Japanese pros: O Meien 9P, Yamashita Keigo 9P, and O Rissei 9P. FAMILIAR FACES LEAD WOMEN'S HONINBO LEAGUE: Some of the early winners in the 24th challenger's tournament for the Women's Honinbo in Japan are well-known to E-Journal readers. Suzuki Ayumi 3P defeated Shiraishi Kyoki 3P in the first round. As reported in earlier issues, Suzuki was defeated in the Seimitsu Cup by the USA's own Jie Li 9d. Kobayashi Izumi 6P, who held the Women's Honinbo title for three consecutive years, but was defeated last year by Chinen Kaori 3P, also won her first round game, defeating Osawa Narumi 2P, who is currently the Women's Meijin in Japan.
