Chris Garlock | Published on 6/4/2023

For the twelfth year, there is a new San Diego Go Champion (no player has ever won the title twice): Moxuan Liu, 6.2-dan from La Jolla. Liu was the only undefeated player in the three-round Open Section. Yingxu Zhu and Aiyang Lu were second and third place by tie breakers over other 2-1 finishers.

The 2023 San Diego Go Championship drew 45 players – including ten in the Open section -- to the San Diego Chess Club in Balboa Park on Sunday, April 30. Over $1,000 in cash prizes were awarded.

The top three finishers in each handicap section are:

Dan Section: Isaiah L Bird 2-dan, Pasco WenQian Kwok 2-dan, Jerry Ho 2-dan

Single-Digit Kyu Section: Angel Shunying Zhou 1-kyu, Abigail Wanyu Chen 2-kyu, Youngmin Kim 2-kyu

Double-Digit Kyu: Brian Ly 13-kyu, Wilton Blue 14-kyu, Richard Xiang 17-kyu

Complete results can also be seen under GoClubs.org -> Tournaments -> Results -> 2023 San Diego Go Championship.

Youth (U23) players outnumbered adult players in the tournament 25 to 20, with 4 out of 10 players in the Open being youth. Comparing AGA ratings for entrants from the 2018 and 2023 Championships, some of the youth players raised their ratings by more than 20 ranks.
