On April 20 and 21, the American Go Honor Society hosted the annual Girls Who Play Go (GWPG) Tournament, where 15 of North America's top young female Go players competed for the coveted championship title. “The event was a smashing success,” say organizers.
In the highly competitive Open division, May Zhang 8k emerged victorious, claiming the top prize. Angel Zhou 1D and Angelina Zhao 2K followed closely, securing second and third places respectively. In Division B, Anida Yu 14k triumphed, with Sofia Cecilia Zepeda 16K and Ruth Morales 20K as the runners-up.
Despite not being able to compete in all the rounds, Tiffany Wang 17k had a memorable experience. "The tournament was a great opportunity for me to learn from female players around the world," said Wang, adding that she signed up for the tournament to develop as a player, and noting that this tournament in particular helped her to “broaden my horizons” as a Go player.
Established with the goal of providing a safe space for female Go players to thrive and improve, “the 2024 Girls Who Play Go Tournament has definitely achieved that goal and surpassed it,” said organizers.
