My name is Byron Russell. I am a Filmmaker and lecturer in Film and Media Arts at California State University, Fresno, and Fresno City College. I have been playing Go since 1988, when I was introduced to the game by my math teacher, Thomas Rike, who ran a Go club at my high school in Oakland. I played for two years in Fukuoka, several years in Koreatown, Los Angeles, and started organizing the Fresno Go Club AGA chapter in 2021, of which I am currently the President. I attended the U.S. Go Congress for the first time last year, where I became certified as an AGA Go Teacher and served as the Tournament Director for the Women's Tournament. I am reprising that role this year and have also contributed to the marketing committee, specifically advocating for the creation of marketing materials in multiple languages. My involvement with the Go community stems from a deep appreciation for the game and my desire to see Go culture expand in the United States. I am very interested in seeing the AGA continue to explore the best ways to invite players to the game and educate them effectively, making the game and its equipment as accessible as possible for all potential players. If elected to the board, I will continue to participate in such activities. I have also designed and created a variety of Go-related equipment and art projects, intended to draw attention to the Go community.
