Go enthusiasts aged 65 and above are gearing up for the highly anticipated 2024 California State Go Championship, set to take place on Sunday, March 10.
Hosted at the residence of former San Diego Go Club president Ted Terpstra, the event promises a day of intense competition and camaraderie. “Come for a fun day of Go with contemporaries and stay for the sunset over the Pacific Ocean,” says Terpstra.
Registration is currently open on the official tournament page, with the deadline set for Friday, March 8, at 11:59 p.m. The championship, now in its third year, attracts senior players from across California. “There is no entry fee,” says Terpstra, “There will be no prizes, no trophies, and no cash, only the title of 2024 California State Go Champion, Over-65.”
The format will include three rounds of AGA-rated handicap competition, accommodating players of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned pros. The time control will be 30 minutes per player, with 5 periods of 30 seconds byo-yomi. Board one players can look forward to playing on a unique 7.5-inch floor board crafted from an 800-year-old Kaya tree, with slate and shell stones provided for the matches.
Last year's champion, Les Lanphear III, emerged victorious from a competitive field of eight seniors, showcasing the talent, passion and determination present in California's senior Go community.
