South Carolina Holds First Official State Championship

Chris Garlock | Published on 6/20/2026

The Upstate South Carolina Go Club hosted the first official South Carolina Go Championship on June 13 in Anderson, South Carolina, drawing 22 players from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.

Although the club hosted its first tournament last year, this was the first event to qualify as an official state championship, thanks to having at least three South Carolina players competing in the top division. Participants ranged in strength from 5-dan to 28-kyu.

The tournament was held at the Anderson County Library conference center. Boxed lunches were provided by Matthew Martin Makes, which also sponsored the event by creating custom 3D-printed trophies for the winners.

Section winners were Richard Malcolm (5D) in Section 1, Sam Kennedy (2K) in Section 2, Jeffrey Kubach (11K) in Section 3, and Bud Henderson (22K) in Section 4.

Tournament organizers thanked the many sponsors that supported the event, including ZBaduk, Guo Juan School, AI Sensei, OGS, the European Go Journal, Yellow Mountain Imports, GoMagic, Matthew Martin Makes, and the AGA.
