Hu Claims 2025 California State Title in Dramatic Comeback

About 75 players from across the United States gathered in San Diego, California, November 29–30, 2025 for the 2025 California State Go Championship, hosted for the eighth year by the San Diego Go Club. Competitors traveled from Arizona, Texas, and New York, along with strong representation from throughout California.

The Open section featured a deep field of 24 players, including six 5-dans, nine 6-dans, three 7-dans, and one professional.

In the final round, undefeated Yiyao Hu (at left in photo) faced Evan Tan (3–1) for the state title and $500 top prize. After falling behind by more than 30 points late in the game, Hu launched a complex ko fight and secured a dramatic 7.5-point comeback victory to finish 5–0 and claim the championship.

Kevin Hong (4–0) placed second, followed by Hongkui Zheng (4–0) in third.

Handicap Division I was won by Jalong Han (5–0), with Ziqi Wang (4–1) second and Anderson Tsai (3–2) third. In Division II, Benjamin Lo (5–0) took first, followed by Olive Long (4–1) and Victor Makoviichuk (4–1). Division III was won by Rebecca Margetts (3–2), with Wilton Blue (3–0) second and Jaylene Chang (2–3) third; Chang (at left in photo with TD Enrique Garcia), age seven, was also recognized as the tournament’s youngest player.

In the 13x13 beginner section, Shaoze Wang (2–1) placed first, June Owatari (2–0) second, and Leyton P. Howell (1–2) third.

Top-board games were streamed on Twitch with commentary and player interviews, drawing nearly 400 unique viewers. Recordings are available on the BadukClub Twitch channel: Game 1, Game 2, Game 3, Game 4, and Final Match (Part 1) & (Part 2) & (Part 3).

Tournament organizers enhanced the Open section experience with slate and shell stones on top boards and a dedicated playing space. Complimentary breakfast and catered lunch were provided, and discounted hotel accommodations were arranged for players.

The San Diego Go Club next hosts the 15th Annual San Diego Go Championship over Memorial Day weekend.
