The 10th anniversary of the historic match between Lee Sedol and AlphaGo is coming up, and
many players around the world still remember exactly where they were when the games were played.
“Wow, the 10th anniversary of the AlphaGo vs. Lee Sedol games are coming up soon,” writes Brian Allen. “Here are my two favorite photos from the watch parties at the Seattle Go Center, which were organized by Dennis Wheeler.”
Across the Go community, players gathered in clubs, cafés, and online forums to follow the dramatic five-game match, which took place March 9-15, 2016 and marked a turning point in the relationship between artificial intelligence and the ancient game of Go. The series—won 4–1 by AlphaGo—sparked intense discussion, excitement, and reflection throughout the Go world.
Do you have memories from watching the match? Did your club host a viewing party, or did you follow the games with friends, students, or fellow players? The E-Journal would love to hear from you.
