Enthusiasm filled the air as players and spectators alike gathered in Raleigh, North Carolina, on a
perfect mid-September day for the North Carolina State Go Championship. The competition, hosted by the Triangle Go Group on September 21, featured 37 participants in an intense day of strategy and skill, with seven strong competitors in the open section ranging from 5 Dan to 3 Dan.
Jeff Kuang, a beloved teacher and long-time Go player, dominated the tournament, capturing the state championship with a flawless 4-0 record. His sharp tactical play and deep knowledge of the game proved unstoppable, as he soared to new heights in his Go career. Kuang not only took home the top prize but also served as Tournament Director (TD), balancing his administrative duties with his winning performance.
Toby Chen secured second place in the champion’s section with a solid 3-1 record, showing remarkable resilience against a tough field of opponents.
In Section A, the competition was fierce, but Joshua Guarino took first place, edging out John Moore based on SOS (sum of opponents' scores) after both posted impressive 3-1 records. Section B saw Xiaoping Wu and Mengyuan Zhu claim the top two spots, with both players finishing 2-2 in a tightly contested battle.
Section C was highlighted by Olivia Jian’s outstanding 3-1 performance, which earned her first place, followed by Inho Kang, who also ended the day 3-1 and took second. In Section D, rising star Neal Siekierski showcased his skill, securing first place, while Matthew Gregoire finished closely behind in second.
Martin Kelly delivered the only other perfect 4-0 performance of the day in Section E, earning him first place, while Clay Westman followed in second with an impressive 3-1 record.
The tournament was not just about competition, but also community. Lunch, graciously provided by Arlene Bridges of the Triangle Go Group, gave players a chance to recharge between rounds. Families played a vital role in the day’s success, with many parents traveling long distances to support their children.
