Hal Small Celebration of Life set for September 14

Chris Garlock | Published on 8/2/2024

A celebration of Haskell Small’s life will be held Saturday, September 14th, 1pm at the River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Bethesda, MD (6301 River Road).

Hal Small passed away on June 1st, 2024, “after spending three weeks in the ICU addressing complications from multiple surgeries related to pancreatic cancer,” write Betsy, Sarah, & Rachel Small. “The removal of the cancer was successful, but he ultimately lost his battle with hospital-acquired pneumonia.”

Hal was buried in Columbia Gardens, an arboretum cemetery, on June 5th, 2024, “the day he had been scheduled to perform at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall playing Beethoven’s monumental Diabelli Variations. Learning this piece was a formidable undertaking that had motivated his rehabilitation from a stroke in 2021 which rendered his left side paralyzed for months. He was laid to rest with a copy of the score, adorned with flowers and surrounded by loved ones.”

Refreshments will be served at the September 14th gathering. “We look forward to sharing memories together,” say Betsy, Sarah, and Rachel. Please Click to RSVP

NOTE: For those who will be joining from afar, a live-stream link will be sent prior to the gathering.
