Congress Women’s tourney hits halfway mark

Chris Garlock | Published on 7/16/2024

The US Go Congress Women’s Tournament has reached the halfway mark after two days of competition. The event attracted 45 players and 41 matches have already been played. On Sunday, 30 kyu competitor Jane Kim was forced to take a bye in the first round, but then won her Open on Monday and proceeded to win her first match of the Women’s Tournament. Meanwhile, there has been stiff competition among the eight top seeded players over 3 Dan. The top table featured Jisu Kim of Korea, the top seed at 7 Dan and Alisa Wu 6 Dan. They were the last table to finish on Monday, with Jisu resigning late in the game. After the match Wu said it was an intense game with lots of fighting; she felt she may have gotten the upper hand during an early fight in a corner, after which the fighting escalated. Later on the game slowed to a crawl as it appeared both players were aware of the situation and Kim seemed to be searching for answers that never came. The last two rounds will take place on Thursday and Friday, with players of all ages and countries of origin vying for the top prizes.
