Black 1 is a heavy move. With the strong White wall above, and without support from any Black stones from below, Black's group has become a big target.


Correct.
Black 1 is the ideal shape move in this position to create a light shape. Would you have seen and made this move in a real game? I hope you would have, because I wouldn't have!

If White plays 2 elsewhere, then later on Black can hane at 3. With 5, Black has a resilient shape.
