Black 1 captures either the 2 stones on the left or the 6 stones on the right.
The best that White has is 2.
Through Black 5 is the best sequence for both sides.
Black captures the 6 stones on the right, but in gote.

Inferior for White.
White can vary with 2 to save the stones on the right, but Black captures
the 2 stones on the left with 5, which overall is a little bigger for Black!
Through Black 7, both of White's group have to live in gote,
while Black seals off the left side in sente.
Failure.
Black 1 is normally a good shape move, but fails here.
White 2 takes the key point in this position.
Through 6, White saves all his stones.
