White 1 is too easy on Black.
White can cut off access to the right side with 3, but Black has a forcing play at 4.
And the force at Black 6 threatens to cut off White's lower left group.
After 8, Black lives easily.
Note: the invasion and defensive techniques in this and the
following diagrams are instructive for players at all levels.

Attaching on the other side at White 1 is better.
Kobayashi Koichi said that simply pulling back at 2 was was good enough for Black.
After 4, Black has reduced White's moyo somewhat, but in gote.
White's moyo is still intimidating, and White now has the choice of continuations.

In the game, Kato aggressively tries to settle Black's shape with 2.
This diagram follows the game line and seems to be the best for both sides.
Through 20, Black has gouged out a large portion of White's moyo, and has solidified the lower right corner. However, White has sente.
In any event, Black went on to win the game by 5.5 points.
