Black's response to White's marked play?

Solution follows    (or click here to download SGF)

Correct.
Black must split White. Black has given White territory on the top and the bottom, so if White settles the left side, the game is over. In the game line here, Black connects solidly out to his top group, and aims to drive White's unsettled group out to the center. Through Black 15, the board is dynamically balanced between thickness (Black) and territory (White), with chances for both sides.

Black variation.
Black 3 is too aggressive. After White cross cuts with 4, White can settle his group, regardless. One possible sequence continues with Black 5, but White 14 is a nice squeezing tesuji. The straightforward sequence through 24 is an excellent result for White.

A mistake.
Black 1 is the correct idea to split White, but the wrong point. Black 7 is forced, otherwise White connects all his stones. But White 8 escapes to the center. In addition, later White can aim at A for big corner profit.
