Problem diagram.
Black plays.

A tsumego problem with a famous tesuji.

Analysis:
   Myron Souris

Solution follows    (or click here to download SGF)

Fails.
White's marked play in the diagram above is increasing eye space at an alarming rate. Surely Black must restrict White by descending with 1? But then White takes the vital point with 2. After 8, White can recapture to preserve the 2nd eye. Black's attack has failed.

See the SGF for many more variations.

Correct!
Almost unbelievably, this famous tesuji at 1 kills White. White 2 and 4 are the stiffest defense. But after Black's cut at 5, White must capture the 3 stones. See the next diagram for the finish.

Continuation.
White 10 captures the 4 Black stones, but Black plays under the stones at 11 on the vital point for the 2nd time! White 12 is a vain attempt to make 2 eyes. After Black 13, White collapses.

White variation.
White can try to vary with 4, but Black 5 is a powerful hane that is the killing response, almost regardless of any previous White play. Black 9 forms a dead shape.

White variation.
White can also try to vary even earlier with 2, but Black 3 is a powerful descent that is the killing response, almost regardless of any previous White play. Black 7 forms a dead shape.
