Solution follows    (or click here to download SGF)

Build thickness.
This kind of position often arises in handicap games, in which Rin recommends that Black plays simply to build thickness. Black 1 is such a move. With 4, Black again simply blocks. Through 13, White lives, but Black builds nice thickness.

White variation.
White 4 is natural-looking, but wrong. Black 7 grabs the vital point. Through 19, White has captured a big corner, but Black's overwhelming outside thickness would be enough to win the game.

Black variation.
Note that Black cannot block with 3. After 10, Black suffers a severe setback in the corner.
