Problem diagram.
White's response to Black's marked play?

Solution follows    (or click here to download SGF)

Natural, but wrong!
White 1 is in the wrong direction. Through 7, Black makes life in sente. A horrible result for White.

White variation.
If White tries to avoid the result from the previous diagram by connecting with 3, Black easily makes life with the sequence through 12. White ends in sente, but Black has multiple defects in White's wall to exploit. Another success for Black.

Correct.
White 1 is the game line. Through White 5, Black can live and even take profit on the left side, but with sente, White can choose how to direct the flow of the game.

White variation.
(Black 4 at 13.) White can also think about 3, but the possibilities are numerous and complicated enough that neither pro wanted to risk this line! One possibility (perhaps not optimal) follows through 17, after which White has ko threats to fight the ko.
