Inferior.
Normally, White 1 is the key to the defense or attack of
Black's upper right corner. But after 4, Black's outside
strength makes White's position uncomfortable. Black's
right side is strengthened, and White's stones lack a base
and will be subject to constant attack.
A good idea.
White 1 is a good practical idea to challenge Black's framework.
The variations are endless, but the following gives reasonable
play for both sides. After Black 6, when the timing is right,
White can live in the corner with 7 and 9.
See the SGF for a variation where Black tries to kill White.
Black variation.
If Black tries to hold White with the hane at 2, White immediately
cuts with 3. This cut and the following move are a common
technique worth remembering. After Black 12, White can play at
either A or B, and be satisfied with the erasure. Given Black's
initial overwhelming influence, White has a flexible shape and
Black's is somewhat heavy.
