White 1 attacks from the correct side. Through 10, Black creates a base along the top, but White's left side potential is high.


White variation.
White 1 attacks from the wrong direction. Now Black has time to come into the corner with 2. Compare the position after White 5 with White's greater territorial potential in the main line above.


White variation.
White 3 is a second mistake in direction. Black can play lightly with 4. Through 8, Black can afford to give up the very light stones in the upper left.
