Black 1 looks hopeless, especially after White descends with 2.
But Black 3 is a clever tesuji. After 5, Black captures the
White stones on the right.
White variation.
White can try to avoid the main line by running off to
the right with a play at 2. But then Black surprises White
with a squeeze through 7.
Black failure.
Black 1 looks natural, but is much worse than the main line.
After 4, White saves all his stones, and Black will eventually
have to end in gote in the corner.
