A good move.
White could also try to erase from the outside; the possibilities are endless. However, White 1 gives flexibility between an outright invasion and erasure from the outside.

Just three variations follow to give a high level feel for the possibilities. See the SGF for a couple more.

Black 2 is the safest continuation, but White 3 achieves the main object of the erasure, especially given that White retains the possibility of at least a ko in the corner with A.

Black variation.
Black can also defend the corner with 2. But after Black's 4, White's shoulder hit at 5 gives an advantageous shape for safely reducing Black's moyo.

Black variation.
So given the outcomes of the two previous variations, Black should press at 2. White cuts at 3 to start some complications. However, White's goal is to reduce Black's framework and not to save these stones! After White 9, even though Black can cut at A, White has gained time for the main purpose: to reduce Black's framework.
