Correct.
White 1 is a magnificent dual-purpose move.
If Black defends the stone to the left with 1,
White unleashes a well-known tesuji against
the stones to the right. After 9, White has
plenty of counterplay possibilities.
Black variation.
If Black defends the stones to the right
with 2, this is one possible sequence with White capturing
2 Black stones on the bottom. And White's stones on the
right still have aji.
Slack.
White 1 lets Black off the hook. Black simply
descends. After Black 6, White's stones on the
right have no aji, and the stones of the left
are uncomfortable.
