White's left side badly needs reinforcement.
White 1 also puts some pressure on the Black
stones in the upper left. So Black reinforces
with 2, after which White has time to take
the large point with 3.
Black variation.
Black does not have time to take the
large point at 2. With 3 and 5,
White has split the 2 Black groups.
Inferior.
If White greedily takes the large profit
point at 1 along the upper side, Black 2
starts this sequence against White's
left side. After 8, Black also makes
profit, threatens to invade at A, and
can aim at cutting points on White's
left side wall.
