Solution follows    (or click here to download SGF)

Correct.
Black, an amateur shodan, should have played at 1. White is obliged to counter with 2, after which Black has the very strong play at 3. After 7, Black has no reason to fear this fight.

Failure.
Black 1 misses the good opportunity in the previous diagram. White develops nicely with 2, and Black makes another faulty play with 3. White says, "Thank you", with 4 by confining Black to the corner.

Black variation.
To make the best of a bad situation, Black should have at least stretched out by attaching at 3. After Black 5, White has two groups to tend to, while Black's group has access to the center. A White play at A is somewhat awkward.
