In the pressure of a game, White can easily make the mistake
of simply blocking at 1!
Black simply has to hane at 2 in sente.
With 5, White ends in gote, and Black maximizes his corner territory.
White has something MUCH better.
Correct.
White 1 is a move well worth memorizing!
If Black descends at 4, White can take sente to play elsewhere.
Black cannot push up through the left side.
Optimal for both sides.
To avoid the previous diagram, Black will play elsewhere with 4.
Later, the sente push with 5 will be White's privilege.
Black has to block at 6.
Through 8, White has taken 2 points from Black's corner AND in sente.
